Portrait & Headshot FAQs:

What's Your Process?

I shoot “tethered” which means that the images are captured on my computer as they are shot. This also means that we can take time to periodically review these images as we go along. After our session, I will select a number of photos for you to choose from, discarding any any extraneous images for you to weed through. Watermarked “selects” are then posted on an online gallery for your comments and selections. You will be able to share access to this gallery with others such as agents, friends and family however, these out-of-camera images are not to be downloaded or distributed. After you have selected which images you like best, they are retouched and uploaded to the online gallery in a high quality JPEG format for you to download. To preserve the integrity of my images, I do not release proofs, raw files or untouched images to clients.

What should I wear?

I always suggest bringing a few different outfits to ensure that we have options when you arrive. Here are some general tips I suggest when it comes to selecting outfits:

  • Have your garments professionally cleaned and pressed so there are no stains or wrinkles.
  • I tend to favour deep, dark solid colours and uniformity. This draws focus to your face.
  • Avoid mixing patterns (e.g., wearing a patterned shirt with a patterned tie).
  • Use complementary colours for accents and accessories.
  • Favour colours which accent your eyes.
  • Make sure it fits and that you're comfortable!

Do I really need a hair and makeup artist?

For women, I generally suggest working with a professional make-up artist (I can recommend one if you like). Correctly applying make up and hair products for a photography shoot has some unique nuances and clients will benefit greatly from a professional touch. Here are some additional tips:

  • Consider applying a small amount of primer such as the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer to reduce pores and imperfections and even out red skin tones.
  • Get a haircut/beard trimming one or two days before the session to avoid any recent skin irritation and to remove any unwanted facial, neck, ears or nose hairs.
  • Stay out of the sun for at least a week before if you can. Sun tans or sun burns are very hard to remove convincingly when editing.
  • Have a manicure. We may see your hands in some poses. Pamper yourself!

What equipment do you use?

My equipment is top grade and includes a Phase One 645DF+medium format and a Canon 5DMark III camera, professional lenses and an array of Elinchrom strobes and modifiers. I also have a cinematic Kino-Flo style lighting set up that I like to use from time to time.
